Reliability of Bioimpedance Spectroscopy and Tonometry after Breast Conserving Cancer Treatment

Abstract: The reliability of these two measurement techniques provides an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to easily quantify breast tissue and fluid changes which in turn may lead to the earlier diagnosis and targeted treatment of breast edema and lymphedema.

“…3 While various methods exist for measuring arm lymphedema, 4 measurement of breast and trunk lymphedema remains challenging. 5 Another challenge in the measurement of lymphedema, regardless of where it manifests, is the assessment of lymphedema composition. Soft tissues affected by lymphedema can change over time, from initially an extracellular fluid-rich edematous stage through to a largely fibrotic condition.…”

“…A study in women with breast cancer evaluated the reliability of bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) to determine breast tissue density and fluid changes that could aid in the early diagnosis of breast edema and lymphedema which are precursors to the development of breast cancer. 23 The BIS measurements were repeated in triplicate in 14 women after breast conserving surgery in combination with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy and measurements were compared with the healthy breast of each woman. The electrodes were applied locally to both breasts.…”

“…BIS and the dielectric constant may be useful in defining those at risk patients with Stage 0 lymphedema and to help define the efficacy and physiologic changes resulting from various treatment modalities. Lastly, tissue tonometry measures the resistance of tissues to compression and quantifies tissue compliance; the degree of compressibility can then be correlated with limb swelling [31,34].…”
