Reliability and validity of the Baecke physical activity questionnaire in adult women with hip disorders

Abstract: Background: Although physical activity maintenance is important for OA management, it is not clear whether people with OA are more inactive or not. One possible reason is no simple monitoring tool to assess physical activity at the clinic. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BQ) in adult women with hip disorders.

“…Over an interval of 1 week, correlations ranged between 0.83, 0.85 and 0.85 for the work, sport and leisure-time indices, respectively. Our reliability scores for work and sport PA were similar to those obtained by Baecke et al (1982) in a sample of Dutch adult men and women (0.88, 0.81) and with a more recent study by Ono et al (2007) of 61 middle aged (53.3 years) women (0.84, 0.83). However, our correlations were higher for leisure time index than those reported by either Baecke et al (1982) or Ono et al (2007), 0.74 and 0.78, respectively.…”

The validity of the Baecke questionnaire has also been established by Ono et al (2007) for this population against the more objective measure of movement counts using digital pedometry and uniaxial accelerometry (Lifecorder, Suzuken Co., Nagoya, Japan); correlations ranged from 0.30 to 0.49 for the 3 dimensions of habitual PA assessed with the Baecke questionnaire in this study.…”

“…It has 3 activity domains, including activity related to the subject's work, sporting activity, and leisure activity. Its reliability has been reported in a sample of subjects with hip arthritis 45 (ICC = 0.87) and in a sample of asymptomatic adult males 18 (ICC = 0.77). The total score was utilized for analysis and higher scores represent higher levels of activity.…”

“…All instruments were administered to the sample through an interview, as described anywhere ( This questionnaire has been used among healthy (Florindo & Latorre, 2003) and non-healthy (Ono, Hirata, Yamada, Nishiyama, Kurosaka & Tamura , 2007) population and it is considered a valid and reliable tool for measuring PA. …”
