Reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the short questionnaire to assess health-enhancing physical activity (SQUASH squash) scale in older adults

Abstract: [Purpose] We tested the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Short Questionnaire to Assess Health-enhancing Physical Activity scale in asymptomatic older adults and sought to confirm discriminator validity in women with osteoarthritis. [Subjects] The participants included an asymptomatic comparison group (men and women) and women with knee or hip osteoarthritis. [Methods] The test-retest method was used to assess reliability. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was chosen to as… Show more

“…20,21 Physical activity Habitual physical activity was assessed at baseline by the Short Questionnaire to Assess Health enhancing physical activity questionnaire, which is considered a valid and reliable method in older adults. 22 This self-administered questionnaire estimates habitual level of physical activity during a normal week over the past month, with questions about the type, duration, and frequency of activities. Total physical activity and exercise-specific activities were calculated in metabolic equivalent of task hours per day by multiplying the exercise time in hours with the accompanying metabolic equivalent of task score of the activity.…”

“…Based on patients' self-reported effort, activities were given an intensity score (ranging from 1 to 9) and activity scores were calculated by multiplying the total minutes of activity by the intensity score, with higher scores indicating a greater level of health-enhancing PA. The reliability and validity of SQUASH to assess daily PA have previously been demonstrated in patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) [36] and osteoarthritis [37].The instrument is available in several languages.…”
