Reliability and Validity of a Turkish Version of the Trust in Nurses Scale

Abstract: Our aim was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a Turkish version of the Trust in Nurses Scale (TNS). A group of people living in Turkey and receiving treatment for lung cancer at a chest hospital completed the scale. We assessed construct validity of the TNS using confirmatory factor analysis. We evaluated the reliability of the scale using coefficient alpha and the result for the internal consistency reliability of the scale was a coefficient alpha of .95. According to our results, the Turkish versio… Show more

“…TNS 38 validity and reliability test was done on the cancer patients; the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was reported as 0.81. The Turkish version of the TNS 39 had a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.95. The scale contains five questions and each covers a nurse activity or a patient’s feelings.…”

“…Trust in nurses: The Trust in Nurses Scale was developed by Radwin and Cabral 32 and adapted to Turkish by Cinar Yucel and Ay. 33 It is a 6-point Likert-type scale with five items that are scored from "1 = never" to "6 = always." The Cronbach's α coefficients of the scale were 0.77 for the original version 32 and 0.95 for the Turkish version.…”

“…The Cronbach's α coefficients of the scale were 0.77 for the original version 32 and 0.95 for the Turkish version. 33 In this study, the psychometric analysis was repeated substituting "disease" for "cancer" in the last item "How often do your nurses provide accurate information about your cancer?" so that the scale could be used with patients in all the inpatient units.…”

“…Trust can be measured and monitored to help health workers to build a trusted health system with better health outcomes, and several tools are available to this purpose; among these tools, the Trust in Nurses Scale was developed from a qualitative study on patients’ experiences of nursing care (9) and the Trust in Nurses Scale was found to have construct validity and reliability (18, 19). The Trust in Nurses Scale offered reliable and valid data when studying the concept of patients’ trust in nurses, and it has been translated and psychometrically assessed in European (20), Asian (21) and Middle Eastern countries (22); however, there is not an Italian version.…”
