Relevance of the acid–base approach in prediction of adhesion properties in two‐component injection moulding

Abstract: We demonstrate the use of innovative wetting method in prediction of the adhesion properties of biobased polymers for two‐component injection moulding, taking into account the acid–base surface properties of joined materials. The measurements were carried out in accordance with modified Berger method by calculation of the difference in shortened acidity parameter ΔDshort between hard and soft component. Correlation factors up to 0.99 were observed between ΔDshort and peel force. In comparison to results obtain… Show more

“…However, the possible use of the parameter has already been demonstrated in practical applications. In particular, the parameter has been established in recent years for modified and unmodified polyethylene, rubber, and epoxy coatings of various metal substrates [14]. So, many surfaces of different natures have been analyzed and it has been proved that the Berger method is a correct and chemically reasonable method for surface characterization.…”

“…In this study, contact angle measurements are used to predict the compatibility between a thermoplastic and a thermoset rubber. Contact angle measurements are frequently used in research to predict adhesion, for example, between polymers and fibers or between different polymers …”

“…In the extreme cases a contact angle of 0° means that the liquid completely spreads the solid and forms a thin film. On the other hand, a contact angle of 180° refers to a nonwetting situation …”

“…The effectiveness of polymer composite material is largely depends on acid−base interactions between the used polymer and the additive. The importance of acid−base interactions at the polymer−polymer or metal‐composite interface is proved by several studies in recent years . Therefore, the first priority for creating the new polymer composite materials is the correct assessment of surface properties to predict their ability for successful interactions and for the controlled modification of these properties.…”
