Relevance of Rheological Properties of Sodium Alginate in Solution to Calcium Alginate Gel Properties

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine whether sodium alginate solutions' rheological parameters are meaningful relative to sodium alginate's use in the formulation of calcium alginate gels. Calcium alginate gels were prepared from six different grades of sodium alginate (FMC Biopolymer), one of which was available in ten batches. Cylindrical gel samples were prepared from each of the gels and subjected to compression to fracture on an Instron Universal Testing Machine, equipped with a 1-kN load cell, at a … Show more

“…The possibility to mix their attractive properties (hydrophilicity, biodegradability, and pH‐sensitive response to environmental stimuli) will allow entrapping and release ionic hydrophilic drug as well as drug needs to be protected from absorption and/or environment of the gastric fluid. Alginate polymers have been widely used in numerous biomedical applications and their delivery system is formed when water soluble alginate salts undergo an aqueous sol–gel transformation due to the addition of divalent ions such as calcium forming “egg–box” shaped structure 21–23. Alginate is one of the natural polysaccharides remain intact in the physiological environment of stomach and small intestine.…”

“…Ca 2+ , resulting in the formation of soft hydrogels in the presence of these ions. The mechanical properties of the alginate hydrogels are mainly determined by alginate MW and relative content of G units, 158 though covalent crosslinking can be used to stabilize and strengthen the hydrogels. In general, the mechanical properties of alginate hydrogels are tunable with a wide distribution of compression, shear and tensile moduli, however, like other hydrogels, they are orders of magnitude weaker than the natural ECM.…”

“…Parameter mutu yang sangat mempengaruhi karakteristik analog bulir jeruk adalah viskositas alginat. Hasil penelitian Fu et al (2011) menyatakan bahwa tingginya viskositas berkorelasi dengan tingginya kekuatan gel alginat. Viskositas dari larutan alginat dipengaruhi oleh konsentrasi, pH, bobot molekul, suhu dan adanya kation logam polivalen.…”
