Relevance of Procalcitonin Levels in Comparison to Other Markers of Inflammation in Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract: The combination of elevated IL-6 and CRP levels was associated with an altered nutritional status. The concomitant elevations in PCT, CRP, and IL-6 could be more sensitive in the evaluation of inflammation.

“…Furthermore, if patients with profound renal dysfunction had been included in our study, results might change in favor of the inflammation which was already evidenced with high CRP and PCT levels in CKD. [16][17][18][19][20] This study has some limitations. Firstly samples were collected in UTI free episode and this minimized the proper evaluation of acute phase reactants in RN.…”

“…[12][13][14][15] On the other hand, despite the lack of infection, higher CRP and PCT concentrations have been reported in CKD patients representing an ongoing inflammation in uremic milieu. [16][17][18][19][20] Based upon the putative role of inflammation in nephropathic pathway, in the present study we aimed to evaluate CRP, PCT and IL-18 levels in the absence of UTI episode in children with VUR who are at high risk for RN and CKD.…”
