Release of an Oxytocic Substance Following Genital Stimulation in Bulls

Abstract: The oxytocic activity of the jugular blood plasma of bulls before and after copulation, ejaculation into an artificial vagina, massage of the seminal vesicles and ampullae and stimulation with an electroejaculator increased from below 0\m=.\01 \g=m\U/ml to a peak level varying from 2 to 1000 \g=m\U/ml 4 to 6 min after ejaculation or 6 to 9 min after the start of electrical or manual stimulation.

“…Sexual preparation also induces the release of oxytocin (Sharma & Hays, 1973) which, if injected before ejaculation into an artificial vagina, increases the sperm output of rams, bulls and rabbits (Kihlstrom & Melin, 1963;Knight & Lindsay, 1970; Knight, 1974a;Schefels & ElAzab, 1975;Voglmayr, 1975;Agmo et al, 1978). Presumably, oxytocin stimulates smooth muscle contractility (Knight, 1972(Knight, , 1974b, thereby enhancing sperm transport within the extragonadal ducts before and/or during ejaculation.…”

“…Sexual preparation entails administering procedures such as teasing, false mounting or active restraint before ejaculation. Such procedures cause a release of oxytocin and possibly other hormones, which, in turn, enhance sperm transport or emission from the extragonadal ducts (Sharma andHays, 1973, Berndtson andIgboeli, 1988). False mounting consists of allowing the male to mount a teaser animal or dummy while the penis is deflected to prevent penetration of the reproductive tract or artificial vagina.…”

“…The latter suggestion is supported by a study showing that restraint of bulls or false mounts prior to semen collection increases the number of motile spermatozoa by as much as 50% (Salisbury & Vandermark, 1961). Furthermore in bulls, it has been suggested that oxytocin and prostaglandin F2a may be at least partly responsible for the improvement of the ejaculate after sexual stimulation (Hafs et al, 1962;Sharma & Hays, 1973).…”
