Abstract. L-ascorbic acid has been widely used in cosmetic and dermatological products because of its ability to scavenge free radicals and destroy oxidizing agents. However, it is chemically unstable and can easily be oxidized. The current cosmetic facial masks available in the market are pre-moistened, which means that the aqueous fluid content of the mask may oxidize some of the unstable active ingredients such as ascorbic acid. This work presents an anti-wrinkle nanofiber face mask containing ascorbic acid, retinoic acid, gold nanoparticles, and collagen. This novel face mask will only be wetted when applied to the skin, thus enhancing product stability. Once moistened, the content of the mask will gradually dissolve and release the active ingredients and ensure maximum skin penetration. The high surface areato-volume ratio of the nanofiber mask will ensure maximum contact with the skin surface and help to enhance the skin permeation to restore its healthy appearance. Electrospun fiber mats may provide an attractive alternative to the commercial facial cotton masks.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising materials for the preparation of novel drug delivery matrices. To reveal the interaction between LDHs and polymers, a series of pH-sensitive sodium alginate/layered double hydroxides (SA/LDHs) hybrid beads were prepared using the simple surface crosslinking method. The SA/LDHs hybrid beads were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM to study their structure and the role that LDHs play. Swelling behaviors in various aqueous solutions and drug loading as well as controlled release behavior of the SA/LDHs hybrid beads were also investigated by using diclofenac sodium (DS) as the model drug to reveal the effects of introduced LDHs. The results indicate that the positively charged LDHs layers are adsorbed on the negatively charged SA polymer chains through electrostatic interaction and act as inorganic crosslinkers in the three-dimensional network. In addition, a small part of DS molecules intercalate into layers of LDHs through an anion exchange process. The electrostatic interaction between LDHs and SA has restricted movability of the SA polymer chains, and then slows down swelling and dissolution rates of the SA/LDHs hybrid beads in aqueous solutions. The electrostatic interaction and the intercalation of DS into layers of LDHs have also improved the entrapment efficiency (EE) and controlled release behavior of SA/LDHs hybrid beads for DS.

Melatonin containing alginate-gum arabic beads were produced by ionotropic gelation. The most suitable alginate-gum arabic ratio for bead production was optimized. To the optimized beads the loading of changing amounts of melatonin was conducted to produce the beads with the best melatonin entrapment and release. Entrapment efficiency of the beads as melatonin carrier was calculated to be approximately 70%. Release profiles of melatonin from the beads were generated using in vitro gastric fluid (pH 1.5) and intestinal fluid (pH 7.4). According to results obtained, following a burst in the first half hour, melatonin release from the beads in pH 1.5 medium was approximately 45% in the first 5 hours whereas the release was approximately 50% in pH 7.4 medium. The results indicate that the beads manufactured may be used as carriers for controlled release of melatonin.
