Relative susceptibility of microsomes from lung, heart, liver, kidney, brain and testes to lipid peroxidation: Correlation with vitamin E content

Abstract: Rates of in vitro lipid peroxidation of microsomes and homogenates were found to vary widely among different tissues and species. In rats and rabbits, lung microsomes peroxidized at a 25- to 50-fold lower rate than liver, kidney, testes and brain microsomes. Heart microsomes peroxidized at a rate slightly greater than, but most similar to, lung microsomes. Comparison of tissue homogenates also revealed the unique resistance of lung and heart to lipid peroxidation. The ratio of vitamin E to peroxidizable polyun… Show more

“…The susceptibility of muscle and liver tissue homogenates to iron-induced lipid oxidation was determined by a modification of Kronbrust and Mavis (1980) method, in which 1 mM FeSO 4 was used as the catalyst of lipid oxidation (approximately 1 mg · ml −1 buffer). Tissue homogenates were incubated at 37 °C in 40 mM Tris-malate buffer (pH 7.4) with 1 mM FeSO 4 in a total volume of 10 ml.…”

“…The effect of different incubation time (0, 30, 60, and 90 min) on egg yolk MDA concentrations was analysed according to the modified distillation method (Kara & Guclu 2012) described by Kornbrust and Mavis (1980). After storage at + 4°C for a week 15 eggs from each group were selected for the MDA analysis.…”

“…The unsaturation index (Bordoni et al, 1999) The susceptibility of muscle tissue homogenates to iron-induced lipid oxidation was determined according to the method of Kornbrust and Mavis (1980). Homogenates were incubated at 37°C and aliquots were removed at fixed time intervals (0, 30, 60, 90 and 150 min) for measurement of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS).…”
