This study examines the local and global changes of fundamental frequency (F 0 ) during phonation and proposes a biomechanical model of predictions of F 0 contours based on the mechanics of vibration of vocal fold lamina propria. The biomechanical model integrates the constitutive description of the tissue mechanical response with a structural model of beam vibration. The constitutive model accounts for the nonlinear and time dependent response of the vocal fold cover and the vocal ligament. The structural model of the vocal fold lamina propria is based on a composite beam model with axial stress. Results show that local fluctuations such as F 0 overshoots and undershoots can be characterized by the biomechanical model and might be related to the processes of stress relaxation of vocal fold tissues during length changes. The global changes of F 0 declination in declarative sentence production can also be characterized by the model. Such F 0 declination is partially attributed to the peak stress decay associated with stress relaxation of the vocal fold lamina propria and partially to neuromuscular control of the vocal fold length.

This study aimed to compare the histomorphology of the elbow capsule and its ligaments to gain a better understanding of the clinically relevant biomechanical stabilization. Eleven human elbows were dissected including the joint capsule with its anterior (AJC) and posterior (PJC) parts, the annular ligament (AL), the radial collateral ligament (RCL) and the ulnar collateral ligament with its anterior (AUCL), posterior (PUCL) and transverse (TUCL) parts. Hematoxylin–Eosin and Elastica van Gieson as conventional histology stainings were applied to determine collagenous and elastic fiber arrangements in transmission and polarization light microscopy. The radial collateral ligament and the anterior part of the ulnar collateral ligament showed significantly more densely packed parallel fiber arrangement than the anterior joint capsule, the posterior joint capsule, and the posterior part of the ulnar collateral ligament (p < 0.02, respectively). The PUCL had significantly more mixed tight and loose parallel arrangements than the PJC, the annular ligament, the RCL, the AUCL and the transverse part of the ulnar collateral ligamentp < 0.02, respectively), while the PJC showed significantly more interlaced mixed tight and loose fiber arrangement than the AL, the RCL and the AUCL (p < 0.003, respectively). The AJC had a significantly higher amount of elastic fibers as compared to the AL, the RCL, the AUCL and the TUCL in fascicular regions (p < 0.04, respectively), while the AUCL had significantly lesser elastic fibers than the AJC and the PJC (p < 0.004, respectively). The densely packed parallel fiber arrangement and few elastic fibers of the AUCL, RCL, and AL indicate a strong biomechanically stabilizing function. The fiber arrangement of the PUCL and the TUCL with few elastic fibers support the medial elbow stabilization. Crimping and elastic fibers provide the viscoelasticity of the joint capsule.

A bovine acellular scaffold for vocal fold reconstruction in a rat model

With a rat model of vocal fold injury, this study examined the in vivo host response to an acellular xenogeneic scaffold derived from the bovine vocal fold lamina propria, and the potential of the scaffold for constructive tissue remodeling. Bilateral wounds were created in the posterior vocal folds of 20 rats, and bovine acellular scaffolds were implanted into the wounds unilaterally, with the contralateral vocal folds as control. The rats were humanely sacrificed after 3 days, 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months, and the coronal sections of their larynges were examined histologically. Expressions of key matrix proteins including collagen I, collagen III, elastin, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and glycosaminoglycans were quantified with digital image analysis. Significant infiltration of host inflammatory cells and host fibroblasts in the scaffold implant was observed in the acute stage of wound repair (3 days and 7 days post-surgery). The mean relative densities of collagen I, collagen III, and glycosaminoglycans in the implanted vocal folds were significantly higher than those in the control after 3 days, followed by gradual decreases over 3 months. Histological results showed that the scaffolds were apparently degraded by 3 months, with no fibrotic tissue formation or calcification. These preliminary findings suggested that the bovine acellular scaffold could be a potential xenograft for vocal fold regeneration.
