Relative amplitude preservation in high-resolution shallow reflection seismic: a case study from Fore-Sudetic Monocline, Poland

Abstract: The acquisition parameters and methodology of seismic data processing for high-resolution seismic imaging viewed through relative amplitude preservation are presented. An example of the obtaining of high-quality, shallow seismic data with a variable end-on spread is shown. The source used for the project is an accelerated weight drop. The study area lies within the mine waste disposal area, near Rudna village (Fore-Sudetic Monocline, WS Poland), and results are given for a 2D experimental profile. The aim of t… Show more

“…Shallow seismic reflection imaging requires the special design of acquisition parameters and processing sequence, when it is aimed at petrophysical reasoning due to inversion [31,32]. The main aim of our study was to image a carbonate sulfur deposit that occurs at depths of 260 m and is 28 m thick.…”

“…As a result, coherent noise did not interfere with the amplitudes of the target reflections. Hence, the removal of linear noise did not disturb the amplitudes reflected from the geological target [32]. In the acquisition we utilized 100 Hz geophones.…”

“…For spectral decomposition a seismic volume with relative amplitude preservation (RAP volume) should be preferably used. Such processing would not modulate both amplitude relation and frequency relation [17,18]. More invasive processing sequences may introduce some frequency range [10] that will affect the response for a transition zone.…”

“…From many years of surveying within the area of sulphur deposits we have developed a special methodology for seismic acquisition and adopted the method of data processing, which is widely used in hydrocarbon seismic exploration, but rarely utilized in shallow seismic surveying. This allows us to obtain the relative amplitude preserved data necessary for reservoir characterisation [13,[20][21][22]. To evaluate the deposit, we used and compared two methods of estimating the sulphur content.…”
