Relationships between soil quality indicators, redox properties, and bioactivity of humic substances of soils under integrated farming, livestock, and forestry

Abstract: Once it is stabilized in the soil, organic matter minimizes limitations of Brazilian Oxisols, such as low cation exchange capacity, low nutrient availability, toxicity due to high aluminum content, and phosphate adsorption. Moreover, humified organic matter fractions are bioactive. It is, therefore, important to evaluate the biostimulant ability of compounds present in soil carbon stocks to develop sustainable technologies for tropical agriculture based on renewable natural resources. The objective of this res… Show more

“…Most chemical indicators of soil quality were related to traditional soil fertility assessments (Figure 5). Other assessments include C and N fractions (evaluated in 23% of the reviewed studies), P fractions (Costa et al., 2014; Deiss et al., 2016; Salton et al., 2014), C stocks (Baldotto & Baldotto, 2018; Rakkar et al., 2019) and electrical conductivity (Hilimire et al., 2013). The work of Baldotto and Baldotto (2018), for example, found that both carbon stocks and bioactivity of humic substances were higher in an integrated crop–livestock–forestry system than in a pasture ( Brachiaria decumbens ) in the topsoil (up to 20 cm) of a Ferralsol, demonstrating the importance of the forestry component in integrated systems.…”

“…The positive effects on biomass increase indicate the biostimulating potential of humic acids, especially HApl. This humic acid present smaller C/N ratio, a humification index (Baldotto et al, 2007: Baldotto & Baldotto, 2018) correlated with the bioactivity of humified organic matter. Baldotto & Baldotto (2018) confirmed a relationship between the humification degree and the bioactivity of humic substances.…”

“…This humic acid present smaller C/N ratio, a humification index (Baldotto et al, 2007: Baldotto & Baldotto, 2018) correlated with the bioactivity of humified organic matter. Baldotto & Baldotto (2018) confirmed a relationship between the humification degree and the bioactivity of humic substances. The authors indicated that humic substances presents bioactivity in part because they contain residues like plant hormones in their structure and the aromatic and hydrophobic nature of stable carbon in combination with the aliphatic and hydrophilic character of humic substances results in a supramolecular structure with a large ion retention capacity.…”

“…Keeping SOM in hot arid regions is difficult due to its low availability and high degradation rates (Souri et al., 2019). Thus, C sequestration is emerging as a strategy to improve soil C and ensure soil sustainability (Baldotto, & Baldotto, 2018; Prashanth et al., 2021; Sun et al., 2020).…”
