Relationships between self-determination theory and theory of planned behavior applied to physical activity and exercise behavior in chronic pain

Abstract: This study examined the relationships between self-determination theory (SDT) and theory of planned behavior (TpB) applied to physical activity and exercise behavior (PA&E) in people with chronic pain. Two hundred and eleven adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain (28 males and 183 females, age range 18 to 82 years, mean age 43 years) were recruited from online support groups and clinic networks in the United States. Participants completed SDT measures relevant to PA&E on perceived autonomy support, autonomy,… Show more

“…Globally, one-third of the general population suffers from some kind of chronic pain 1 , among which the most prevalent health problem is work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs), with severe longterm pain and physical disability 2 . Clinical practice guidelines, such as those of the International Association for the Study of Pain 3 , recommend that physical activity be an integral component of pain rehabilitation services.…”

“…The office employees in Iranian universities sit at their desk during working hours without engaging in SE 11 . Despite the mentioned benefits of SE 11 , issues related to a lack of adherence to this activity or motivational factors are poorly understood 1 . Therefore, to predict and explain the factors influencing SE behavior is crucial to many researchers and professionals who are engaged in designing proper interventions to improve and promote this beneficial activity among office employees 12 .…”

“…Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are conditions that can affect person's muscles, bones, and joints. MSDs are widely known as chronic pain (Brooks et al, 2017). In most studies, office employees were confronted with this problem faced by at the workplace (Ghasemi et al, 2018).…”

“…PA&E are health behaviours. However, health behaviour change theories are surprisingly rarely included in studies on PA&E as treatment for chronic pain, even though recently one study reports relations between core constructs within the SDT and the Theory of Planned Action applied on individuals with chronic pain [239], and one study showed that interventions based on the Transtheoretical Model [244] increased recreational PA&E in patients with chronic low back pain [245].…”

“…Thus, adherence to prescribed PA&E is a key factor for high quality treatment as well as research on PA&E in performed by individuals with chronic pain. Nevertheless, there is a lack of conclusive knowledge about the underlying mechanisms behind poor adherence, as well as about effective interventions to improve adherence [7,239].…”
