Relationships among the Internal Health Locus of Control, Mental Health Problems, and Subjective Well-Being of Adults in South Korea

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to confirm the relationship between internal health locus of control, mental health problems, and subjective well-being in adults during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the mediating effect of mental health problems on the relationship between internal health locus of control and subjective well-being was examined. A cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted via online survey. The participants were 600 adults over 20 years of age living in South Korea. The c… Show more

“…The correlation coefficients of external LOC are less consistent and weaker than those observed of other dispositional factors, in contrast to what has been observed in studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic with different populations [ 63 , 64 ]. For example, comparing the r s values of LOC and IUS with BDI-II scores (0.22 and 0.56, respectively), it is remarkable that the latest factor showed a much stronger association with depression, which has been closely associated to external LOC [ 22 ].…”

“…However, external HLoC is positively associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, while internal HLoC is found to be associated with adherence to COVID mitigation measures [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The COVID-19 pandemic was less stressful for those with greater internal LoC who believed that they have influence over their own lives, even during a time of crisis, compared to those with greater external LoC [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…If poor mastication ability is assumed to be a risk factor for low levels of SWB, it is necessary to ask patients: “Can you bite tightly on both sides with your teeth or prosthesis?” and not just “Do you use a prosthesis?” Of course, a prosthesis, even if removable, has another advantage; it notably contributes to improved esthetics and pronunciation. Because SWB refers to the overall satisfaction with life, [ 1 , 29 , 30 ] satisfaction with esthetics and pronunciation by using a prosthesis may contribute to better SWB. However, if researchers form a hypothesis that masticatory function may contribute to SWB, they should confirm not only whether a prosthesis is used but also whether mastication ability is maintained or improved.…”
