a b s t r a c tMastitis is an inflammation of the udder, mainly caused by bacteria, and leads to economic loss, due to discarded milk, reduced milk production, reduced milk quality and increased health costs in both dairy sheep and cattle. Selecting for increased genetic resistance to mastitis can be done directly or indirectly, with the indirect selection corresponding to a prediction of the bacteriological status of the udder based on traits related to the infection. The most frequently used indirect method is currently milk somatic cell count (SCC) or somatic cell score (SCS). This review reports the state of the art relating to the genetic basis of mastitis resistance in sheep and explores the opportunities to use SCC as selection criterion in a breeding programme to improve resistance to mastitis in sheep, discussing the actual situation and prospects for improvement. It has been stressed, in particular, that although it is unlikely that selection for mastitis resistance by the farmers on their own will be successful, there is good prospect for genetic improvement if reliable pedigree and performance recording is implemented across flocks, combined with breeding value estimation. To achieve this, a strong and well-structured organization to implement and support the programme is essential.

Este artigo objetivou revisar as informações recentes sobre mastite em pequenos ruminantes, abrangendo etiologia, epidemiologia, aspectos de controle e profilaxia. Houve a preocupação em reunir resultados de estudos desenvolvidos no Brasil, uma vez que a mastite tem a interferência de uma série de fatores, como fatores ambientais e outros decorrentes dos sistemas de manejo empregados, condições essas determinantes para etiologia e epidemiologia da enfermidade. A prevalência da mastite em caprinos varia entre 22 e 75%, sendo que os casos de mastite subclínica são os mais frequentes. Existe uma carência de trabalhos voltados para os aspectos epidemiológicos da enfermidade no nosso país. Contudo, observa-se que a mastite vem assumindo importância cada vez maior nos rebanhos voltados para produção de carne, sendo encontrados resultados de pesquisa, principalmente na espécie ovina. A mastite estafilocócica corresponde à maior fração nas infecções intramamárias em pequenos ruminantes. O caráter zoonótico de alguns patógenos, a exemplo do Staphylococcus aureus ressalta a importância da implantação de programas de controle em propriedades leiteiras. Algumas das ferramentas de diagnóstico ainda necessitam de padronização, principalmente para espécie caprina que apresenta uma série de particularidades. Ainda são discutidas as principais estratégias de controle como o manejo de fêmeas e suas crias, os procedimentos de ordenha e a utilização de vacinas.

Abstract:This study was performed to determine the prevalance, causative microorganisms and antimicrobial susceptibility of microorganisms in goat subclinical mastitis around Hatay. A total of 1010 mammary halves of 505 goats were examined by California Mastitis Test (CMT). The somatic cell counts (SCC) were determined by microscopic method. Isolation and identification of microorganisms were carried out by conventional microbiologic methods. Staphylococci were further differentiated by API-STAPH system. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disc diffusion method. The prevalance of the subclinical mastitis was found 8.71 %. The most prevalent microorganism was staphylococci (71.5%). Microorganisms except Staphylococci were Streptococci (8%), Bacillus spp. (5.7%), Escherischia coli (4.5%), Corynebacterium spp. (3.4%), Pseudomonas spp. (2.3%) and Acinetobacteri spp. (2.3%). In addition, mix infection was defined in 2.3% of samples. Highly resistance was found against penicilin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline, gentamicin, amoxicillin. Slightly resistance was found against enrofloxacin, amoxicillin-clavulonic acid, kanamycin plus cephalexin and there was no resistance against cefalotin. It was concluded that, prevalance of subclinical mastitis should be cared; also staphylococci especially Coagulase negative staphylococci are the most commonly isolated bacteria in subclinical mastitis around Hatay. In goat mastitis diagnosis strong positive CMT results should be cared. CMT and SCC results should be supported with microbiologic tests. 3) de izole edildi. Ek olarak örneklerin % 2.3'ünde miks enfeksiyon saptandı. Antibiyotik duyarlılık testlerine göre penisilin, eritromisin, oksitetrasiklin, gentamisin, amoksisilin'e karşı yüksek oranda direç gözlendi. Enrofloksasin, amoksisilin klavulonik asit, kanamisin ve sefaleksin'e karşı orta düzeyde direnç saptanırken, sefalotine karşı direnç yoktu. Sonuç olarak Hatay çevresinde keçi sürülerinde subklinik mastitisin prevalansının dikkate değer seviyelerde olduğu, koagülaz negatif stafilokokların en fazla izole edilen mikroorganizmalar olduğu belirlendi. Keçilerde subklinik mastitis tanısında kuvvetli CMT reasksiyonlarının dikkate alınması gerektiği, CMT ve somatik hücre sayılarının mikrobiyolojik yöntemlerle desteklenmeleri gerektiği kanısına varıldı.
