Relationship of Personal Authoritarianism with Parenting Styles

Abstract: This research investigated the relationship between the personality construct of right-wing authoritarianism and Baumrind's 1971 proposed parenting styles of authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive parenting. 68 youth ages 12-18 along with one of their parents participated. The children rated both parents on Buri's 1991 Parental Authority Questionnaire. One of the parents responded to Altemeyer's Right-Wing Authoritarian Scale. People with higher scores on Altemeyer's scale were more likely to prefer the … Show more

“…The rationale behind this argument builds on the notion the authoritarian personality trait (see e.g., Baars & Scheepers, 1993;Stenner, 2009) or right-wing authoritarianism is intrinsically related to conforming and acquiescing to social norms (e.g., Vaughan & White, 1964) and links between parental right-wing authoritarianism and children's rates of conformity have been shown (Guidetti et al, 2017). Right-wing authoritarianism, in turn, correlates moderately with authoritarian parenting style (Manuel, 2006). Moreover, it has been shown that fathers' self-reported parental style is more related than that of mothers to children's behavioral outcomes (Roopnarine et al, 2006;Tavassolie et al, 2016).…”

“…Buri et al (1988) found authoritarianism in parents to be inversely related to selfesteem in young adult children, whereas authoritative parents' children showed high self-esteem, especially daughters. Manuel (2006) also focused on authoritarianism, finding correlations between adolescents' ratings of their parents' authoritarianism in parenting style and the parents' selfdescribed authoritarianism as a personality construct. Interestingly, Manuel (2006) reported strong similarities between parents in their disciplinary styles, whereas Buri et al (1988) found more variability, with the mother's parenting style somewhat mediating the impact of the father's.…”
