Relationship of natural killer-cell activity to rhesus antigens in man

Abstract: Summary.-A number of previous studies have shown that the level of natural killer (NK) cell activity in humans is relatively constant for a given individual but varies widely between individuals. The factors which determine this variability are largely unknown, but genetic factors appear to be involved. In the present study it was found that Rh-normal subjects and melanoma patients had significantly higher natural cytotoxicity to target cells than Rh+ patients. This difference did not appear to be due to sensi… Show more

“…The series of the investigations regarding the relationship between blood type and biological phenomena of human tumors demonstrated that blood type or blood group antigen must have some biological significance associated with an immunological aspect. 17 The prominent findings in the current study were a significant correlation of blood group O with a lower incidence of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, a significantly higher proportion of far advanced carcinoma in patients with blood group AB, and, in contrast, a lack of an association between ABO blood group and prognosis in patients with esophageal SCCs. Slater et al reported that all of the multiple cancers of colon and rectum were found in patients with Rh+ blood type.…”

“…Another genetic marker which we have recently shown may be associated with NK activity is the Rhesus antigen system, in that Rh-subjects appeared to have higher NK activity than Rh+ subjects (Hersey et al, 1979b). Examination of patients and relatives in this study revealed a low incidence of Rh-subjects.…”

“…The mean NK value of 80 normal subjects was 14-97±5-78 for the MM200 target cell (Hersey et al, 1978) and 14-68±6'2 against the Chang target cell (Hersey et al, 1979b). [This latter value was higher than the mean value of 9.6% recorded in Hersey et al (1978).…”

“…These have been reported for both ABO and Rhesus systems, involving differences in susceptibility to certain bacterial infections and autoimmune disease in the ABO groups [7] and higher natural killer (NK) cell activity [6,10] but increased susceptibility to virus infections [7] in Rh (D)-negative individuals.
