Relationship of Age and Serum Immunoglobulins to Autoantibodies against Brain Constituents in Primates

Abstract: Sera and immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM of apparently healthy man, rhesus and patas were tested against neuron cells and myelin proteins of brains of the same primate species. An increasing number yielded a positive antimyelin test with progressing age. IgG reacted more frequently than IgA and IgM. Autoantibodies appeared more often in nonhuman primates than in man.

“…The relationship of age and autoantibodies against brain constituents in apparently healthy humans, Macaca mulatta and Erythrocebus patas has been demonstrated in a previous communication [4], It was shown that the number of these primates with such antibodies as well as with antinuclear antibodies and rheumatic factor increased with progressing age. Furthermore, IgG and IgM antibodies to neuron cells and low molecular weight brain proteins also became demonstrable in a larger number of sera during aging.…”

“…Apparently healthy patas monkeys, belonging into the juvenile and adult age groups, have been selected. They were screened by methods described previously [4]. They were of either sex, and weighed 2-8 g. The sera of none of them contained precipitating, bactericidal and neutralizing antibodies against Sh.…”
