Relationship between Vagal Tone, Cortisol, TNF-Alpha, Epinephrine and Negative Affects in Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract: Crohn’s disease (CD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involve brain-gut dysfunctions where vagus nerve is an important component. The aim of this work was to study the association between vagal tone and markers of stress and inflammation in patients with CD or IBS compared to healthy subjects (controls). The study was performed in 73 subjects (26 controls, 21 CD in remission and 26 IBS patients). The day prior to the experiment, salivary cortisol was measured at 8∶00 AM and 10∶00 PM. The day of the experimen… Show more

“…Afferent signals carried in the vagus nerve can activate cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and inhibit cytokine release (Tracey, 2007). CD Heydarpour et al 15 patients with low resting parasympathetic vagal tone exhibited a higher level of TNF-α than those with high parasympathetic vagal tone (Pellissier et al , 2014).…”

“…VNS significantly inhibited TNF production and improved disease severity for up to 84 days. The effectiveness of VNS has also been demonstrated in patients with Crohn's disease [15,16]. These results showed that VNS can reduce inflammation in humans, offering a promising view of the usefulness of VNS for other inflammatory diseases, including AKI.…”

“…There is an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system in IBD that could play a role in the pathophysiology of IBD. Indeed, we have reported that vagal tone was significantly blunted in IBD in relation with negative affects and a high TNFα level (Pellissier et al, 2010;Pellissier et al, 2014). The VN, through its afferent fibers, activates the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis (Fig.…”
