Relationship between total homocysteine, total cholesterol and creatinine levels in overt hypothyroid patients

Abstract: Hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, which can not be fully explained by the atherogenic lipid profile, particularly total cholesterol and LDL-C, and other pathogenic factors may be involved. Plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and accelerated atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum total homocysteine (tHcy) levels and its relation to total cholesterol, creatinine and thyroid hormones fT… Show more

“…Conversely, several other investigations demonstrated that Hcy was nonsignificantly correlated with the TC level in overt hypothyroid patients ( r  = 0.288, P  = 0.12). [36] However, HHcy and LDL-C were both associated with endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. In our study, elevated plasma levels of Hcy promoted LDL-C, and the LDL-C level was also increased in HHcy patients.…”

“…Studies on this subject confirm the presence of an inverse relationship between thyroxin serum levels and cholesterol [46]. Other studies demonstrate the influence of iodothyronine on the catabolism of the very-lowdensity lipoprotein, showing increase in LDL and very-low-density lipoprotein fractions in untreated hypothyroidism [47].…”

“…In another study, it is reported that hyperthyroidism induced a decrease in serum cholesterol. However, no alterations were reported in hypothyroidism and euthyroidism [46].…”

“…24 Moreover, hypothyroidism has always been associated with low folic acid level and a state of hyperhomocysteinemea (more than 100%). 25 Experimental studies showed that MTHFR activity was low in hypothyroidism and high in hyperthyroidism. 26 In addition to fortifying food with folate, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all women be prescribed multivitamins containing folic acid at least 1 month prior to conception to prevent neural tube defects, 27 and increase a woman's chances of becoming pregnant.…”
