Relationship between surface electrogastrography and antropyloric pressures

Abstract: The cutaneous electrogastrogram (EGG) and intraluminal antropyloroduodenal pressures were recorded in 12 healthy volunteers for 30-min periods during phase II of the interdigestive motor complex, during intraduodenal infusion of 10% triglyceride, and after intravenous erythromycin (3 mg/kg). During phase II, the frequency of the EGG was relatively constant in each individual, with a median frequency of 0.046 Hz [2.8 counts per minute (cpm)]. EGG frequency was greater (P < 0.05) than the median rate of antral p… Show more

“…Both tachygastria and arrhythmia were associated with gastric hypomotility. Bradygastria was originated in the normal pacemaker and propagated distally and was associated with gastric contractions with a reduced frequency (4,43). Gastric dysrhythmia has been reported to be associated with nausea and vomiting (5).…”

“…Power ratio: defined as the ratio of after to before meal intake EGG peak power values (i.e., postprandial/fasting), where the peak power refers to the power at EGG dominant frequency. Changes in EGG peak power seem to reflect gastric contractility (Smout et al, 1980;Hamilton et al, 1986;Chen et al, 1994;Sun et al, 1995).…”

“…Studies have evaluated EGG in healthy subjects (98), in patients with motility-like dyspepsia (29), chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (33,40), and chronic constipation (100) and after gastrectomy (63). EGG findings have also been correlated with scintigraphy (19), manometry (118), or ultrasound (99).…”
