Relationship between Serum Uric Acid Concentration, Metabolic Syndrome and Carotid Atherosclerosis

Abstract: Objective Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is 1.37 (0.79-2.38), and 1.80 (1.03-3.15) in men, and 1.0, 1.04 (0.56-1.94), 2.35 (1.30-4.22), and 2.20 (1.16-4.20) in women. After adjusting for various known risk factors, the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis (IMT 1.0 mm) was higher in subjects in the second, third and fourth quartiles of SUA concentration with odds ratios (95% CI) of 2.41 (1.08-5.37), 3.33 (1.49-7.42), and 2.73 (1.17-6.35

“…To date, a few studies have specifically evaluated the association of SUA and carotid atherosclerosis, with some reporting higher SUA levels to be associated with carotid atherosclerosis 20,22,23,26 , consistent with our findings, while others found no association 21,24,25 . Prior epidemiologic studies of hyperuricemia and adverse clinical cardiovascular outcomes have also been conflicting.…”

“…If hyperuricemia is indeed an independent risk factor for CVD, it might motivate a change in traditional treatment recommendations. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26] . Such conflicting results may in part be related to differences in analytic approaches and/or effectiveness of controlling for potential confounding.…”

“…Patients with a history of upper abdominal surgery were excluded to avoid any possible effect on the measurement of fat thickness. Visceral obesity was shown as P max 6.9 mm in men or 10 mm in women (equal to visceral fat accumulation 100 cm 2 as measured by computed tomography [15][16][17][18] ).…”

“…We applied condition-specific cutoff points for MetS based on the guidelines, with modifications, for the diagnosis of this condition in Japan 18) . MetS was defined as visceral obesity assessed by ultrasonography and at least two of the following three conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia and impaired fasting glucose.…”
