Relationship between sensory perception and frailty in a community-dwelling elderly population

Abstract: Taste and smell perception, particularly taste perception, were associated with a greater risk of frailty in community-dwelling elderly people. These results suggest that lower taste and smell perception may be an indicator of frailty in old age.

“…Recently, there have been publications suggesting that appetite and perception of taste and smell are associated with frailty and MCI. Taste and smell perception, particularly taste, were associated with a greater risk of frailty in community‐dwelling older people . One previous study reported appetite loss or disturbances in persons with dementia and MCI .…”

“…Taste and smell perception, particularly taste, were associated with a greater risk of frailty in community-dwelling older people. 26 One previous study reported appetite loss or disturbances in persons with dementia and MCI. 27 The present study showed an association between appetite and cognitive frailty, and further research is necessary to determine its relevance.…”

“…Somekawa et al observed a significant association of gustatory impairment, but not of olfactory impairment, with frailty in community‐dwelling older adults after adjustment for confounding factors, using the Appetite, Hunger, Sensory Perception subjective questionnaire test . However, self‐assessment tools for olfactory testing are reliable indicators only in olfactory‐impaired patients, but not in healthy controls .…”

“…12,13 Using a subjective questionnaire test, a significant association was reported between lower gustatory perception, but not lower olfactory perception, and frailty in communitydwelling older adults. 14 In the present study, we evaluated the association of olfactory and gustatory impairment evaluated by well-defined objective tests with sarcopenia/frailty indexes proposed by AWGS and SOF in community-dwelling Japanese older adults with no prior history of support/care-need certification.…”

“…Somekawa e colaboradores 37 avaliaram a relação entre a fragilidade e o paladar e a percepção do olfato de 768 idosos, com 65 anos ou mais, que viviam em áreas urbanas. A baixa percepção do gosto e do cheiro, em particular a percepção do gosto, foi associada a um maior risco de fragilidade em idosos que vivem na comunidade.…”
