The efficiency of cacao breeding program can be increased by choosing superior crosses to be made between divergent clones. We assessed the genetic distance among five clones with RAPD data (genetic distance - GD) and with yield component data (Mahalanobis distance - MD). The clones were evaluated in a diallel, during five years, for five yield components. A total of 130 RAPD bands were scored. GD and MD were used to determine the correlation between genetic distances among clones and the performance of their hybrids. The correlation between GD and MD was 0.67 (P=0.03). Both distances were related to heterotic performance of hybrids for wet seed weight/plant and wet seed weight/fruit. The average hybrid performance for the same two yield components was correlated with only MD. Hence, genetic distances measured by RAPD and yield components can be used as a guide to the choice of the superior crosses.
A eficiência do programa de melhoramento de cacau incrementará pela seleção de cruzamentos superiores entre clones divergentes. Foram estimadas as distâncias genéticas (GD), com dados de RAPD, e de Mahalanobis (MD), com dados de componentes de produção, entre cinco clones. Os clones foram avaliados em um dialelo, por cinco componentes de produção, durante cinco anos. Um total de 130 bandas RAPD foram avaliadas. GD e MD foram utilizadas para cálculo da correlação entre distâncias entre clones e a performance de seus híbridos. A correlação entre GD e MD foi de 0.67 (P=0.03). Ambas as distâncias foram correlacionadas à performance heterótica dos híbridos para peso de sementes frescas/planta e peso de sementes frescas/fruto. A performance híbrida média para os mesmos componentes de produção foi correlacionada somente com MD. Assim, distâncias genéticas medidas por RAPD e componentes de produção podem ser usadas como um guia para a escolha de cruzamentos superiores

The ubiquity of nonparental hybrid phenotypes, such as hybrid vigor and hybrid inferiority, has interested biologists for over a century and is of considerable agricultural importance. Although examples of both phenomena have been subject to intense investigation, no general model for the molecular basis of nonadditive genetic variance has emerged, and prediction of hybrid phenotypes from parental information continues to be a challenge. Here we explore the genetics of hybrid phenotype in 435 Arabidopsis thaliana individuals derived from intercrosses of 30 parents in a half diallel mating scheme. We find that nonadditive genetic effects are a major component of genetic variation in this population and that the genetic basis of hybrid phenotype can be mapped using genome-wide association (GWA) techniques. Significant loci together can explain as much as 20% of phenotypic variation in the surveyed population and include examples that have both classical dominant and overdominant effects. One candidate region inherited dominantly in the half diallel contains the gene for the MADS-box transcription factor AGAMOUS-LIKE 50 (AGL50), which we show directly to alter flowering time in the predicted manner. Our study not only illustrates the promise of GWA approaches to dissect the genetic architecture underpinning hybrid performance but also demonstrates the contribution of classical dominance to genetic variance.T he often observed phenotypic superiority of progeny relative to their parents, or heterosis, is a universal phenomenon and of great importance to plant agriculture. The earliest description of heterosis (also known as hybrid vigor or superiority) dates to Darwin's studies of cross-fertilization in plants. He noticed that intercrossing distantly related individuals gave rise to larger, more vigorous progeny (1). Four decades later, George Shull coined the term "heterosis" (2) for this phenomenon, which he and Edward East had independently described for hybrids of inbred maize in 1908 (3, 4). Heterosis has long been of interest to evolutionary biologists as a potential explanation for the ubiquity of cross-fertilization in plants and animals, but it is also a central component of agricultural breeding programs. The combination of hybrid seed technology and inbred line improvement has driven an unprecedented improvement in maize yield over the past century (5). Despite the economic importance of heterosis and its intensive investigation in a wide spectrum of species, prediction of hybrid performance from parental information remains a major challenge (6).In the terms of quantitative genetics, hybrid vigor (and its opposite, inferiority) describes a deviation of progeny from the phenotypic mean of the parents. ResumoEm soja, tem sido relatada a ocorrência de heterose para a produção de grãos, e embora a utilização de cultivares híbridas não seja ainda uma realidade nesta espécie, o conhecimento da heterose é importante para uma pré-seleção de cruzamentos, visto que cruzamentos mais heteróticos estão associados a uma maior divergência entre os genitores. Entretanto, a obtenção de sementes F 1 em quantidade suficiente para a avaliação experimental em parcelas é muito difícil e, assim, outros indicadores da ocorrência da heterose poderiam ser muito úteis. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho a avaliação da heterose para a produção de grãos em soja e as suas relações com as distâncias genéticas (DG), obtidas com o marcador molecular AFLP. Seis híbridos F 1 oriundos de cruzamentos com diferentes distâncias genéticas (DG) e os respectivos genitores foram avaliados em experimentos com quatro repetições, empregando o delineamento em blocos ao acaso. Foi observada uma grande variação entre os cruzamentos quanto às heteroses, isso é, de 6,29 a 56,50% em relação à média dos genitores ( mg h ) e de -0,34 a 51,30% em relação ao genitor superior ( gs h ). As correlações entre as distâncias genéticas (DG) e as heteroses foram elevadas (r = 0,83 e 0,60, respectivamente, para mg h e gs h ), indicando que as distâncias genéticas podem ser utilizadas como indicativas de cruzamentos mais divergentes e, consequentemente, como um dos auxiliares na seleção de genitores mais divergentes em soja. AbstractHeterosis has been reported for grain yield in soybeans, and despite the fact that hybrid cultivars have not been used yet, the knowledge of heterosis magnitude is very important for a previous selection of crosses, since heterosis is related to parental divergence. However, the obtention of enough F 1 seeds for experimental evaluation in plots is a time-consuming task, and thus, other indicators of the occurrence of heterosis could be very useful. The objective of this work was to evaluate heterosis and its relationship with AFLP molecular genetic distance (DG). Six F 1 hybrids, derived from parents with different levels of genetic distances (DG) and their respective parents, were evaluated in completely randomized block designs, with four replications. Heterosis estimates were very different among different crosses, varying from 6.29 to 56.50% for mid-parent heterosis ( mg h ) and from -0.34 to 51.30% for high-parent heterosis ( gs h ). Besides, the correlation between heterosis and genetic distances (DG) were very high (0.83 and 0.60, respectively, for mg h and gs h ), which indicates that DG can be used as indicative of more divergent crosses, and thus, as one criterion for selection of more divergent parents.
