Relationship between Occlusal Findings and Orofacial Myofunctional Status in Primary and Mixed Dentition

Abstract: The significant increase in the prevalence of malocclusions between the primary and mixed dentition--distoclusion and lateral crossbite, and the impairment of vertical occlusal relationships in the mixed dentition in particular--reveal the need for orthodontic prevention. They highlight the absence of applied interceptive and early treatment measures in orthodontics. The indication system in current use for early orthodontic treatment here in Germany fails to fulfill the requirements for prevention-oriented de… Show more

“…TDI was diagnosed using the criteria established by Andreasen et al 23 Malocclusion was recorded in the presence of at least one of the following conditions: increased overbite (> 2 mm), increased overjet (> 2 mm), anterior open bite, anterior crossbite and posterior crossbite. 24,25 Following the clinical examinations, a fluoride varnish was applied to all the children's teeth as a preventive and therapeutic measure for dental caries. In addition, a letter was sent to all the parents informing them of the oral diagnosis of the preschool children, and explaining the need for dental care.…”

“…1,2 Increased overjet, deep overbite, lateral crossbite and anterior open bite are the most common types of malocclusion in the primary dentition. 3 Some malocclusions that arise at 3 years of age may improve over subsequent years (open bite), whereas others may worsen (distoclusion, lateral crossbite and unfavorable vertical occlusal conditions). 3,4 Genetic factors, ethnic factors, nonnutritive sucking habits, impaired nasal breathing and functional atrophy of the maxilla due to the underdevelopment of dental arches are frequently associated with malocclusion.…”
