Relationship Between Aphis gossypii (Homoptera: Aphididae) and Sticky Lint in Cotton

Abstract: The study was conducted in the northern Texas Rolling Plains in 1999 to define the relationship between number of cotton aphids, Aphis gossypii Glover, and resulting contamination of cotton lint by honeydew. Whole-plot treatments were three furrow irrigation management treatments: cotton grown without supplemental irrigation (dryland), irrigated cotton with last irrigation in mid August, and irrigated cotton with last irrigation in late August. Subplots within each irrigation treatment included an untreated ch… Show more

“…Moreover, high aphid densities later in the cotton season also present risks because they produce copious amounts of honeydew, which blackens the leaf, decreases photosynthetic activity, and contaminates the lint resulting in severely reduced lint quality [2]. In general, there are two cotton aphid breakouts each year, during the seedling of cotton andsummer, and exhibit phenotypic differences due to environmental heterogeneity in China.…”

“…Upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae), is a cosmopolitan, warm climate crop species, geographically distributed between latitudes 328S and 458N, that is well adapted to the climate of the Mediterranean basin, and it has been one of the most important crops in Greece for many decades (National Statistical Service of Greece 1999). The cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a serious pest of cotton throughout the World, causing severe losses together with significant qualitative degradation (sticky lint) (Rosenheim et al 1997;Deguine et al 2000;Slosser et al 2002). The aphid is extremely polyphagous, infesting over 900 plant species around the world (Blackman and Eastop 2000).…”

“…Pengamatan keanekaragaman dan kelimpahan kutu daun dilakukan pada daun cabai muda sekitar 10 cm dari pucuk tanaman. Pengambilan nimfa atau imago kutu daun hanya dilakukan dengan satu metode yakni koleksi langsung menangkap dengan tangan setiap kutu daun yang ditemukan pada petak sampel dengan mengikuti metode Slosser et al (2002) dan Miao et al (2007) karena kutu daun mobilitasnya sangat rendah.…”
