Relationship between hydrogen bond network dynamics of water and its terahertz spectrum

Abstract: Water is the source of all life. The understanding of the terahertz absorption spectrum of water is the prerequisite for the application of terahertz technology to biomedicine. The choice of terahertz frequency is essential for achieving the biological effects of terahertz with high efficiency and low energy consumption. The complex hydrogen bond network of water possesses a broad terahertz absorption peak. Therefore, it is necessary to study the relation between the dynamics of the hydrogen bond network of wa… Show more

“…In other words, the system exhibits a high-order ice phase at this point, suggesting that the diffusion coefficient is small, as shown in figure 1. When f = 24 THz, the first and second peaks of g oo (r) decrease with the increasing r and the third and fourth peaks disappear, showing the microstructural characteristics of short-range order and long-range structural disorder, in accordance with the arrangement of the liquid molecules [60].…”

“…The spectral intensity of different concentrations of sodium hexametaphosphate solution demonstrates that the THz absorption intensity of the sodium salt solution decreased with the increase in concentration, whereas the THz transmission increased. The THz spectra show that the dissolution of sodium hexametaphosphate in water promotes the breaking of the hydrogen bond between water molecules to some extent because the absorption of THz waves by water is mainly due to the hydrogen bond, thus improving the transmission intensity of the THz wave 14 .…”

“…The intermolecular stretching and bending of vibrational modes of this network are in the terahertz band (strong resonance frequency of 1.5 THz). When a neuron is exposed to terahertz wave radiation, the vibrational modes of the hydrogen bonds in it are excited, thus triggering resonance ( Duan et al, 2021 ). The dynamic equilibrium of the water molecular network structure is broken, resulting in strong absorption of terahertz waves by the water ( Kristensen et al, 2016 ).…”
