Relationship between Human Leukocyte Antigen Determinants and Courses of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Caucasian Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease

Abstract: We conclude that the susceptibility to HBV infection and the different courses of HBV infection are not strongly related to HLA status in Caucasians.

“…A previous study showed that the allele frequencies of HLA-B8, DR3, A30, and DQA1*0501 were high in patients with CHB, suggesting that these alleles are associated with chronic hepatitis B. 16 The study by Shen et al suggested that susceptibility to chronic hepatitis B was strongly associated with HLA-DRB1*10 allele in northern Chinese patients. 8 The findings of Jiang suggested that HLA-DRB1*0301, DQA1*0501, and DQB1*0301 are closely associated with the susceptibility to CHB.…”

“…The role of the HLA system in the pathophysiology of ESRD is intriguing, but not completely resolved. Numerous associations and non-associations of HLA with ESRD have been reported in the medical literature, but with controversial results in Table 1 [82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93].…”

“…There are no known disease associations with the full 60.3AH. The telomeric region (HLA-DR13, -DQA1*0102, -DQB1*0604) confers protection against persistent hepatitis B in Caucasian individuals [23], but HLA-B40 and HLA-DR13 are not unique to 60.3AH. HLA-B40 is shared by two other haplotypes (60.1AH and 60.2AH), whereas HLA-DR13 is common to 62.3AH, 65.2AH, and 44.4AH [24].…”
