Abstract: Ambient UVB was significantly inversely associated with MIR for all cancers together and four of ten cancer types. Solar UVB may increase survival from some cancers in China.

“…Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, growing interest in vitamin D led to numerous ecological (correlational) studies on cancer incidence and mortality, most of which used indices of exposure to UVR as a proxy for vitamin D levels. Results from these studies confirmed inverse relationships between residential UVB doses and cancer mortality [5,6]. Results from studies on cancer survival, which used season as a proxy for vitamin D [7,8,9,10], supported the inverse gradient observed between UVB and cancer mortality in latitude studies.…”

“…We recently developed a generalized linear model where mortality has a binomial distribution conditional on the sum of mortality and incidence [14] (see Additional file 2). It would be useful to adapt this model using a smooth function on the logit scale, with the odds ratio providing an estimate of the MI ratio.…”

“…It has emerged as a novel player in benefits to the heart, insulin secretion control, anti-microbial defense, detoxification of xenobiotics, and, possibly, anti-proliferative, and apoptosis exhibiting immuno-modulatory functions in different cancers. Lower risks to some cancers in China have been linked to UVB radiation responsible for vitamin D production [ 5 ]. Vitamin D has now gone beyond the role of humeral homeostasis and osseo beneficial effects.…”
