Relationship between Body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage, estimated by bioelectrical impedance, in a group of Sri Lankan adults: a cross sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundBody Mass Index (BMI) is used as a useful population-level measure of overweight and obesity. It is used as the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults. The relationship between BMI and body fat percentage (BF %) has been studied in various ethnic groups to estimate the capacity of BMI to predict adiposity. We aimed to study the BMI–BF% relationship, in a group of South Asian adults who have a different body composition compared to presently studied ethnic groups. We examined the influence of … Show more

“…Previous studies have stressed the importance of taking gender into consideration when using BMI and measuring body fat/obesity in the population, or differences in physical activity, fitness and being overweight in adolescents. 23,24 These results, which have been shown previously on many occasions, nevertheless indicate that the sample used was "normal". This can increase confidence when it comes to interpreting the new findings.…”

“…Here I am trying to assess whether BMI reflects the fat content of the individual. There are studies which suggest the existence of correlation between BMI and body fat percentage (4) . Some studies suggest that relationship between BMI and percentage body fat is not strong (5) .…”

“…There is difference of opinion whether Body Mass index is a true indicator of fat content of the body. Ranasinghe C etal compared body mass index and body fat percentage estimated by bio electrical impedance and found that there is a strong correlation between BMI and body fat percentage measured by bioelectrical impedance [4] . But Meeuwsen S etal, in their study concluded that the relationship between BMI and percentage body fat is not strong [5] .…”

“…In fact, epidemiologic and clinical studies have suggested that high level of fat mass might be associated with increased metabolic syndrome risk (MetS) (Liu et al 2013;Madeira et al 2013;Ranasinghe et al 2013). Adipose tissue not only stores excess triglycerides, but function as an endocrine organ by releasing several adipokines, which appear to modulate glucose and lipid metabolism, inflammation, appetite and insulin resistance (Attie and Scherer 2009).…”
