Relations among mother and home visitor personality, relationship quality, and amount of time spent in home visits

Abstract: Evaluations of a variety of home‐based early childhood intervention programs show that home visit rates fall short of the number prescribed. In an attempt to add to knowledge about reasons for this phenomenon, the current study explored associations among mother and home visitor personality, relationship quality, and time spent in home visits. Maternal negative emotionality was positively related to both time spent in home visits and relationship quality. Maternal positive emotionality was inversely related to… Show more

“…Indeed, home visitors report that mental health needs, including depression, are among the most challenging problems that they face, and they typically report being inadequately prepared to address this problem (Lecroy & Whitaker, 2005; Stevens et al, 2002; Tandon et al, 2005). Moreover, although warmth and empathy are valued characteristics in care providers, and may partially contribute to an amelioration of depressive symptoms over time, they are not universally exhibited by all home visitors (Sharp, Ispa, Thornburg, & Lane, 2003) and are rarely formally targeted in training.…”

“…Family involvement, when taken across all income and education levels, is a strong indicator of student achievement (cited in Allen & Tracy, 2004). Parent involvement has positive benefits to children and families--especially those from lower socioeconomic and ethnically diverse groups (Baker et al, 1999;Jonson, 1999;Sharp, Ispa, Thornburg, & Lane, 2003). Such involvement is an integral part of Head Start's and Early Head Start's comprehensive model of programming for impoverished children ages 0-5.…”
