“…Primary reflux is thought to be more common before the age of 5 years when the incidence falls considerably, apparently by spontaneous disappearance. Barker et al [1969] reported reflux in 26.4% of children with symptomatic infection but in only 5.2% of adult parents. Primary vesico-ureteric reflux is thought to have several effects: (a) incomplete bladder emptying encourages bladder infection; (b) reflux provides an ascend ing pathway to the kidney by bacteria in the bladder, and (c) the transmission of back pressure from the bladder to the kidney might lead to renal damage.…”
