Relation between objectively measured feeding competence and nutrition in children with cerebral palsy

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of undernutrition in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to determine the relation with feeding ability. Ninety children with CP from special needs schools were examined. Undernutrition was diagnosed on one or more of the following criteria: weight <2nd centile, triceps or subscapular skinfold measurement <3rd centile, mid-arm circumference <5th centile. “…It was observed, in the total group, in 47.5% of subjects, in the MMI group in 26,5%, and in the SMI group in 63.0%. Malnutrition is slightly lower in other countries: 2016 Karagiozoglou LT recorded a 38.1% undernourished patients (18) in Greece in the total group of respondents, 2006 Bertoli S found 41.2% (19) in Italy, and 2001Troughton KER 2001 41.2% patients (20) in Ireland. In 2012, Dahlseng MO published a study conducted in Norway where 20% of patients with SMI were malnourished, which is significantly lower than in our patients (21).…”

“…Destaca en este estudio la elevada prevalencia de desnutrición en el grupo de niños evaluados, 81,1% (Tabla 1), muy superior al encontrado en otros trabajos ( 7,15,33,35,[39][40][41][42] ). El tipo de desnutrición más frecuente fue la desnutrición crónica, como ocurre en el resto de la población infantil de nuestro país, siendo sustancialmente diferente el alto porcentaje de desnutrición crónica reagudizada (32,1%) encontrado en estos niños (Tabla 1).…”

“…56,68,72 Children with CP are more likely to be underweight and shorter than peers because of malnutrition. 64 Assessment of the malnutrition includes a thorough physical examination, dietary history including assessment of prolonged feeding time and poor oromotor control, as well as laboratory evaluation including total lymphocyte count, albumin, prealbumin, total protein, and transferrin levels.…”
