Relating inclusive innovations to Indigenous and local knowledge: a conceptual framework

Abstract: The concept of inclusive innovation has become widely embraced in the agricultural domain and promises to overcome traditional innovation paradigms by emphasizing more balanced, sustainable, and just human-environmental relations. Indigenous and local knowledge play an increasingly important role in debates about inclusive innovation, highlighting the diversity of relevant actors and marginalized perspectives. At the same time, the positioning of Indigenous and local knowledge in innovation processes remains a… Show more

“…Local cultures and ecosystems have been 'shaped and transformed in long histories of regional-to-global networks of power, trade, and meaning,' as Tsing (2005: 3) puts it. Linking localness to absolute isolation is not only empirically dubious, but also potentially politically harmful as it has often contributed to framing Indigenous communities as static remnants of the past (Peddi et al, 2023) and ecosystems as untouched wilderness that needs to be separated from any human influence (Büscher & Fletcher, 2020). "The island" of which we discuss the possibility is not the pristine or absolute island, and the same applies to the ideas of isolation and localness on which this conception of islands would rely.…”

“…An approach that is focused on embodied learning would fit well with these responsible and emancipatory innovation processes but would need to better emphasise the inclusion of embodied knowledge. In this, we can learn from innovation approaches that have sought to include different, often Indigenous knowledge in innovation processes (Peddi et al., 2022; Sayarer et al., 2019; Verran et al., 2007). These approaches would support the development of technologies that can function within the diverse biophysical contexts of farms and farmers.…”

“…The agriculture and food production industry has purportedly grown rather interested in the idea of inclusive innovation (Peddi et al, 2023). It claims to replace conventional innovation paradigms by placing an emphasis on more equitable, long-lasting, and wellbalanced human-environmental partnerships.…”
