“…Accordingly, in the absence of direct dating, hypothesis F2 is considered more appropriate to explain the sedimentary record of the RdF, so surface D4 is interpreted as the subaerial unconformity associated with the LGM sea‐level fall. The oldest sedimentary units underlying unconformity D4 within the RdF (U1 to U4) probably correspond to Late Pleistocene deposits that have tentatively been correlated with the sequences of a similar age (representing glacial cycles since 500 kyr bp ) recently described in the Ría de Vigo (Martínez‐Carreño & García‐Gil, ). The resemblance between the records of the two rias is reasonable because sea‐level variations and geology at a regional scale are similar.…”

“…the Ría de Ferrol is possibly a simple incised valley fill like most on the European Atlantic coast (Chaumillon et al ., ). Hypothesis F2: Surface D4 is interpreted as the subaerial unconformity associated with the LGM sea‐level fall and units U1 to U4 are interpreted as pre‐LGM deposits: i.e. the Ría de Ferrol is a compound incised valley fill similar to that described in the Ría de Vigo (Martínez‐Carreño & García‐Gil, ).…”

“…Assuming a rough sedimentation rate between 3 and 6 mm y −1 [27], the bottom of the core (220 cm) could respond to sediments deposited 300-700 years ago. However, these sediments might be older according to [49], who dated the sediments in San Simon Bay deposited at a 200-220 cm depth to have sunk 8905 ± 305 cal. aBP.…”

“…Although Quaternary tectonic activity has been confirmed in the region (e.g. Martínez‐Carreño & García‐Gil, ), no significant movements have been recognized since the Late Pleistocene (Blanco‐Chao et al ., ).…”
