“…Many transmitters have been shown to affect contraction of intestinal muscle strips via PKC‐dependent mechanisms. In gastrointestinal muscle, PKC has been shown to be involved in signalling via ACh 6 , SP 7 , angiotensin II 8 , CCK 9 and EGF 9 . Studies on isolated ICC and muscle cells are needed to determine if these effects are in muscle cells or ICC.…”

“…Because it was not recognized that segments of circular and longitudinal muscle contain ICC, many studies that have concluded that PKC has a role in muscle may actually include effects in ICC. For example, in gastrointestinal muscle, PKC has been shown to be involved in regulating muscle contraction via acetylcholine (ACh), 6 substance P (SP), 7 angiotensin II, 8 cholecystokinin (CCK) 9 and endothelial growth factor (EGF) 9 . ICC have receptors for ACh, SP, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and nitric oxide (NO), 10–14 so this signalling could involve ICC.…”

“…The Krebs bicarbonate solution was aerated with 95% O 2 -5% CO 2 until the pH was 7.4. Circular muscle strips (1.0 £ 0.2 cm) were prepared from the corpus, cutting at right-angles to the greater curvature (11).…”
