Regulation of waaH by PhoB during P i Starvation Promotes Biofilm Formation by Escherichia coli O157:H7

Abstract: In open environments such as water, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 responds to inorganic phosphate (Pi) starvation by inducing the Pho regulon controlled by PhoB. This activates the phosphate-specific transport (Pst) system that contains a high-affinity Pi transporter. In the Δpst mutant, PhoB is constitutively activated and regulates the expression of genes in the Pho regulon. Here, we show that Pi starvation and deletion of the pst system enhance E. coli O157:H7 biofilm formation. Among different… Show more

“…The LPS is a macromolecule attached to the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and can influence biofilm formation and structure in K. pneumoniae and other species through various mechanisms, such as modulating surface hydrophobicity and surface charge [60,[75][76][77][78]. The wbbM and wzm LPS synthesis genes were previously shown to be upregulated in the biofilms of K. pneumoniae isolates compared to planktonic growth [51].…”

“…Demonstrou-se, por exemplo, que a carência de fosfato inorgânico em E. coli O157:H7 enterohemorrágica aumenta a formação de biofilme, importante mecanismo de virulência e patogenicidade (VOGELEER et al, 2019). Enquanto a superativação do regulon Pho atenuou a virulência de E. coli O78 patogênica aviária (BERTRAND et al, 2010).…”
