Regulation of Dietary Protein Solubility Improves Ruminal Nitrogen Metabolism In Vitro: Role of Bacteria–Protozoa Interactions

Abstract: Precision dietary interventions (e.g., altering proportions of dietary protein fractions) has significant implications for the efficiency of nutrient use in ruminants, as well as lowering their environmental footprint, specifically nitrogen (N) emissions. Soluble protein (SP) is defined as the protein fraction that is rapidly degraded in the rumen (e.g., non-protein N and true protein), and our previous study found that regulating SP levels could improve N efficiency in Hu sheep. Thus, the present study was co… Show more

“…At 12 h, a noticeably high number of Prevotella_ 9 was found for BL, compared with the substrates. As Prevotella species have been reported to be protein degraders, the situation reflected that a drastic fermentation of nitrogen sources occurs at 12 h for BL. Furthermore, 3-HPPA significantly stimulating the cells number of Agathobacter and Bifidobacterium , which have been shown to be beneficial for the colonic homeostasis .…”

“…Only those bacterial taxa with an abundance >0.1% in at least one sample were analyzed. KEGG microbial gene function prediction analysis was performed using PICRUSt according to previous protocol (Zhang et al, 2022). The Pearson correlations between differential flora and rumen fermentation parameters, as well as differential flora and differential metabolic pathways, were completed by the complot package in R language.…”

“…Using 515 F-806R primers, the 16 S rRNA genes in various locations were amplified [ 28 ]. The amplification of 16S rRNA and the quality assessment of polymerase chain reaction products were performed following the protocol of a previous study [ 29 ]. Illumina sequencing libraries were created using the NEBNext ® UltraTM IIDNA Library Prep Kit (Cat No.…”
