Regression of Milk Production on Forage Production and Forage Consumption1

Abstract: Synopsis Milk yield was correlated with forage yield and consumption, when expressed on a per acre basis, and regression equations are given to show this relation. Milk production per cow was of greater economic significance than milk production per acre. Returns were higher for orchardgrass plus Ladino clover than for orchardgrass plus N fertilization.

“…Although dry matter production was the same, stands consisting of 30 to 45% legumes were found to significantly increase milk production acre -1 compared to stands of pure grass (Austenson et al, 1959). Similarly, a study conducted by Williams (1967) showed that the number of calves per cow and the weaning weights of the calves were greater for cows grazing grass-legume mixed pastures than for those cows grazing pastures fertilized with N.…”
