Registration of ‘YZ05-51’ Sugarcane

Abstract: YZ05-51' (Reg. No. CV-161, PI 673444) sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was developed through cooperative research conducted by the Yunnan Sugarcane Research Institute (YSRI) of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Yunnan Yunzhe Technology Development Co. Ltd. It was released to growers in mainland China on 1 Aug. 2013. YZ05-51 was selected from the cross Yacheng 90-56 × 'ROC 23' planned by YSRI and crossed at Yacheng Sugarcane Breeding Station (YSBS) of the Guangzhou Sugar Industry Resear… Show more

“…The stool that became YZ081609 was selected from Stage 1 and advanced to Stage 2 in February 2009 with 2153 unreplicated selections. The seedling was selected from the plant‐cane crop, with emphasis on visible judgment for plant height, millable stalks per stool, stalk diameter, self‐trashing, pith and amount of hairs (group 57) on leaf sheath, and occurrence of smut and mosaic (Zhao et al, 2015). For Stage 2, the row length was 4.5 m, and the row spacing was 1.0 m. The number of rows for each clone depended on the number of stalks of the selected stool in Stage 1.…”

“…In addition, it showed positive traits such as thick stalks, good self‐trashing, little hair on leaf sheath, and clean leaves, with only a rare smut stool found in ratooned plants. In Stage 5, cane and sugar yields were calculated using the following equations as described by Zhao et al (2015): leftCane yield (Mg ha1)=SSW (kg stalk1)×MS(stalks number at the middle two rows)×10,000(normalm2)/12(normalm2)/1000 …”
