Phomopsis seed decay (PSD) of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) is primarily caused by Phomopsis longicolla. Currently, percent seed infection is used as a method for evaluating resistance to PSD. However, researchers need a common system for classifying soybean genotypes for their reaction to P.longicolla that is consistent across environments. The purpose of this research was: (i) to evaluate the reaction of a select set of soybean accessions to P. longicolla, and (ii) determine the effects of irrigation and two harvest regimes (normal and delayed) on seed infection. We propose a classification system for comparing reactions to P. longicolla among accessions based on a Phomopsis seed infection index (PSII), derived by dividing the percent seed infection of each accession by percent seed infection values of susceptible standards selected within early and late maturity groups. Percent seed infection by P. longicolla infection was greater when accessions were irrigated during the growing season and harvested at normal maturity. Some lines such as MO/PSD‐0259 were rated as resistant to P. longicolla (7% seed infection) when not irrigated and harvested at maturity, but were rated as susceptible (39% seed infection) with irrigation and delayed harvest. The resistance ratings to P. longicolla using percent seed infection and PSII varied among accessions. SS93–6012, for example, had similar ratings for both (9% seed infection and 16% PSII). PI 416942 exhibited some resistance to P. longicolla based on percent seed infection (8%), but no resistance based on PSII (32%). Accessions PI 594478, Delmar, SS93–6012, SS93–6181, PI 594603A, and PI 594712 were classified by PSII as moderately resistant under irrigation and with delayed harvest. These results indicate that simple comparisons of percent seed infection among accessions without irrigation, without delayed harvest, and without a standard control of a similar maturity group might result in false conclusions about resistance to P. longicolla.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of drought and Phomopsis on seed composition constituents in Phomopsis susceptible (S), moderately resistant (MR), and resistant (R) soybean genotypes grown under irrigated and non-irrigated environments. Genotypes of maturity group (MG) III and V were grown under field conditions in 2003 and 2005. Seed protein, oil, fatty acids, sugars, and minerals were evaluated in seeds harvested at harvest maturity (R8) and 15 days after harvest maturity (delayed harvesting). The results showed that seed protein and oleic acid were higher in S than in MR or R genotypes at 15 days after harvest maturity in MG III in non-irrigated soybean. For MG V genotypes, seed protein, oil, and oleic acid were higher and linoleic and linolenic acids were lower in MR and R than in S in irrigated 429 and non-irrigated soybean at harvest maturity and 15 days after harvest maturity. In MG III genotypes, seed sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose were higher in MR and R than in S genotypes in irrigated soybean at maturity only. In irrigated or non-irrigated soybean, seed sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose were higher in R than in MR or in S in MG V in 2003 and 2005 at harvest maturity or 15 days after harvest maturity. Seed minerals were also altered in MG III and V. This research demonstrated that seed composition components were altered by drought and Phomopsis and the degree of alteration depended on the level of resistance of the genotype and MG.

MO/PSD‐0259 is essentially a composite of 11 lines that resulted from the cross between PI417479 × Merschman ‘Dallas’ made at Columbia in 1984 and was registered as PSD‐resistant germplasm in 1993 (Minor et al, 1993). The F 1 and F 3 generations were grown during the winters of 1990–1991 and 1991–1992 in Puerto Rico, respectively, while the rest of the generations were grown at the BREC.…”

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm SS93‐6012 (Reg. No. GP‐362, PI 652442) and SS93‐6181 (Reg. No. GP‐363, PI 652443) were developed and released by the University of Missouri–Columbia in January 2006 as resistant to Phomopsis seed decay (PSD), caused by Phomopsis spp. Both lines were developed from a cross between MO/PSD‐0259 (PI562694) (PSD‐resistant MGIV germplasm) and ‘Asgrow 3834’ (PSD‐susceptible MGIII cultivar) made in 1990 at the Bradford Research and Extension Center of the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. The lines were composited in the F5 generation and evaluated for yield and Phomopsis seed decay infection. These lines are highly resistant to Phomopsis spp. SS93‐6012 has a relative maturity of 4.2, purple flowers, gray pubescence, an indeterminate growth habit, tan pods at maturity, yellow color seeds, buff hila, and seed weight of ∼14 g per 100 seeds. SS93‐6181 has a relative maturity of 4.0, purple flowers, tawny pubescence, an indeterminate growth habit, tan pods at maturity, yellow color seeds, imperfect black hila, and seed weight of ∼16 g per 100 seeds. So far, PSD‐resistant commercial soybean cultivars are not available, and these two lines may be used for development of PSD‐resistant high‐yielding soybean cultivars.
