Registration of Soybean Germplasm SS93‐6012 and SS93‐6181 Resistant to Phomopsis Seed Decay

Abstract: Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm SS93‐6012 (Reg. No. GP‐362, PI 652442) and SS93‐6181 (Reg. No. GP‐363, PI 652443) were developed and released by the University of Missouri–Columbia in January 2006 as resistant to Phomopsis seed decay (PSD), caused by Phomopsis spp. Both lines were developed from a cross between MO/PSD‐0259 (PI562694) (PSD‐resistant MGIV germplasm) and ‘Asgrow 3834’ (PSD‐susceptible MGIII cultivar) made in 1990 at the Bradford Research and Extension Center of the University of Missou… Show more

“…For example, germplasm genotypes MO/PSD-0259 (Minor et al 1993), SS 93-6012, and SS 93-6181 (Pathan et al 2009) were shown to be resistant to Phomposis sp. in Missouri.…”

“…from PI 200501 and 'Arksoy' (Gizlice et al, 1994). MO/ PSD-0259 was used to develop SS93-6012 and SS93-6181, both with good PSD resistance (Wrather et al, 2003(Wrather et al, , 2004Pathan et al, 2009). Smith et al (2008b) showed that PI 80837, PI 417479, and PI 360841 had ≤15% seed infection by P. longicolla.…”

“…In Missouri and Nebraska fi eld trials, both MO/ PSD-0259 and PI 417479 expressed (0−6% incidence) of PSD (Elmore et al (1998) and Minor et al, 1993). MO/ PSD-0259 was used to develop SS93-6012 and SS93-6181, both with good PSD resistance (Wrather et al, 2003(Wrather et al, , 2004Pathan et al, 2009). The inheritance of resistance in PI 80837 and MO/PSD-0259 was reported to be conditioned by single dominant genes (Jackson et al, 2005).…”

“…These include rotating soybeans with non-legume crops, such as corn or wheat, which are not hosts for the fungus, treating seeds with fungicides or applying fungicides during pod-fill, tilling the soil to disrupt spore dissemination, and harvesting mature seeds promptly. Along with these strategies, the use of resistant cultivars is the most effective method for controlling PSD (Jackson et al, 2005;Pathan et al, 2009;Roy et al, 1994), especially when environmental conditions are conducive for disease development.…”
