Registration of ‘Northern’ Hard Red Winter Wheat

Abstract: ‘Northern’ (Reg. No. CV‐1114, PI 676026) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed and released by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station in 2015. Northern was derived from a composite of two crosses, MT9982//MTW0072/NW97151 and MTW0047//MTW0072/NW97151. Northern was developed using a modified bulk breeding method and selected as an F5:7 headrow. Northern was tested under the experimental number MT0978 in Montana yield trials from 2009 to 2015. Like predominant cultivar Yellowstone, North… Show more

“…FourOsix is an awned, white‐glumed, hard red winter wheat. In Montana, FourOsix has medium maturity, heading about 2 d later ( P < 0.05) than ‘SY Wolf’ (PI 662050), at a similar date to ‘Keldin’ (PI 669490), ‘SY Monument’ (PI 672581), and ‘Decade’ (PI 660291, Riveland et al, 2011), and 2 to 3 d earlier than Yellowstone and ‘Northern’ (PI 676026, Berg et al, 2016) (Table 1). FourOsix is a semidwarf (75 cm, n = 47; RhtB1b [marker analysis, USDA‐ARS, 2017]) cultivar, 2 to 6 cm shorter ( P < 0.05) than Decade, Northern, Keldin, and Yellowstone and similar in height to SY Monument and SY Wolf (Table 1).…”

“…Flathead is an awned, early‐heading, semi‐dwarf, white‐glumed HRW wheat. In Montana, Flathead has early maturity, heading about 2 d later ( P < .05) than ‘Brawl CL Plus’ (PI 664255; Haley et al., 2012), 2 to 3 d earlier than ‘SY Monument’ (PI 672581), Decade, and ‘FourOsix’ (PI 689753; Berg et al., 2019), and 4 to 6 d earlier than ‘Keldin’ (PI 669490), ‘LCS Jet’ (PI 678936), and ‘Northern’ (PI 676026, Berg et al., 2016) (Table 1). Flathead is a semi‐dwarf (75 cm, n = 50; RhtB1b [marker analysis, USDA–ARS, 2018]) cultivar, 1–4 cm shorter ( P < .05) than Keldin, Northern, and Decade, and 1–7 cm taller than FourOsix, SY Monument, Brawl CL Plus, and LCS Jet (Table 1).…”

“…Ray is a tall, apically awnletted, white‐glumed, hard red winter wheat. In Montana, Ray has late maturity compared with currently grown grain cultivars, heading about 2 d later ( P < 0.05) than Yellowstone and ‘Northern’ (PI 676026; Berg et al, 2016) and 4 to 5 d later than ‘Decade’ (PI 660291; Riveland et al, 2011) and ‘FourOsix’ (PI 689753; Berg et al, 2019) (Table 1). Ray is tall (87 cm, n = 38), 10 to 15 cm taller ( P < 0.05) than Yellowstone, Decade, Northern, and FourOsix (Table 1).…”
