Regional variation in blindness in children due to microphthalmos, anophthalmos and coloboma

Abstract: Major congenital abnormalities of the globe are important causes of severe visual loss in children, particularly in Asian countries. Further research into etiology is warranted in order to plan prevention programs.

“…Symptoms of vitamin-A deficiency become first noticeable in the eye: an early sign of postnatal deficiency is night blindness, and eye malformations are the most sensitive indicator of fetal vitamin-A deficiency (Wilson et al, 1953).
