Regional Strain Determination and Myocardial Infarction Detection by Three‐Dimensional Echocardiography with Varied Temporal Resolution

Abstract: Three-dimensional wall-motion tracking has the ability to accurately determine regional myocardial deformation and detect MI. Different heart rates within a physiologically relevant range have no effect on 3D strain accuracy. Strain values calculated from higher frame rate acquisitions were found to have a slightly better accuracy.

“…STE provides deformation information of the LV, which has been reported to be valuable in identifying preclinical or subtle myocardial dysfunction. 14 16 , 26 , 30 STE has been used in TAV to evaluate cardiac mechanics in AS and AR patients, which revealed lower deformation in asymptomatic/symptomatic patients with normal LVEF when compared with healthy controls. 17 20 Few reports are available on BAV cardiac mechanics, 31 – 33 and none of them reported the subtle mechanical changes based on valvular lesion types.…”

“…Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) based on tracing acoustic markers within the myocardium on standard two-dimensional (2D) images provides strain and rotation parameters, which overcomes the limitation of TDI and has proven to be valuable in evaluating cardiac function. 14 16 Investigations of AS and AR in tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) patients revealed abnormal strain and rotation values when compared with normal healthy controls. 8 , 13 Analysis of strain provides a powerful means of unmasking subtle myocardial dysfunction that is not detected by LVEF in early stages.…”

“…Zhu et al . [ 29 ] used 3D strain echocardiography for comparison of strain values with sonomicrometry (excellent echo-window quality by the use of an in vitro study). In this study the interobserver reproducibility of strain values was excellent (R 2 values using high frame rate were 0.86 for longitudinal strain and 0.86 for circumferential strain) based on the good image quality.…”

“…Global longitudinal strain has the best interobserver reproducibility [ 32 ], especially comparing experienced readers [ 32 ]. In different clinical situations there will be a need to use segmental analysis [ 29 ].…”

“…3DE images can be rotated and cropped, overcoming 2DE limitations by allowing for ideal VSD(s) view. 3DE is limited by low temporal resolution . Considering the potential of 3DE to be more accurate in assessing VSD size, implicating that it would lead to more effective and confidently made treatment decisions, a 2D/3DE comparison study simultaneously taking VSD number, size, and shape into account is needed and to our knowledge has yet to be performed.…”
