Regional Knowledge Economies: An Eu‐uk and Israel Perspective

Abstract: This paper elaborates on the concept of 'knowledge economy' as a prelude to demonstrating its incidence at regional and sub-regional levels in the UK, EU and Israel. The paper shows consistencies in the incidence of knowledge economies across the countries and georegion. This is a good test of the basic methodology, which is simple, and suggests its underlying theory is robust for distinctive spaces and times. It should thus contribute to standard methodology in academic and policy environments. The future eco… Show more

“…However, the innovation systems approach has been criticised for focusing too little on human resource development and for its lack of attention to emerging economies (Lundvall et al 2002). At the firm level, scholars have investigated clusters of innovative firms (Malmberg & Maskell 2002;Cooke & Schwartz 2008;Malecki 2010) and connections between local, extra-local and transnational innovation networks (Coe & Bunnell 2003). Others have examined the roles of cities in knowledge creation and global competition for skilled workers.…”

“…In Cooke and Schwartz [16], we showed how one evolutionary strand of Schumpeterian regional economics led from Veblen's concept of 'cumulative causation' to Myrdal and Hirschman giving us a regional disequilibrium perspective that underpins the present paper. But, better known perhaps is the strand woven first by Perroux, directly rendering Schumpeter's notion of 'swarming' of entrepreneurs imitating innovations and causing the evolution of complex input-output schedules into regional space and then advocating growth pole policy on its back, stimulating also technical instrumentation such as inputoutput modelling, linkage studies (Hirschman, again) and, ultimately, regional science after Isard.…”
