In the context of China’s implementation of the rural revitalization strategy, it is essential to study the total factor productivity of animal husbandry in pastoral areas under the grassland ecological compensation policy, which is essential for promoting the harmonious development of animal husbandry production and grassland ecology in pastoral areas and helping the rural revitalization strategy. Based on the survey data of pastoral areas in Inner Mongolia, this paper measured and comparatively analyzed the differences in the changes in total factor productivity of pastoral households in each region and its convergence and discussed the main factors driving the total factor productivity of animal husbandry. The results of the study show that: (1) Except for Ulanqab City, the annual average total factor productivity of animal husbandry in the region as a whole and in each region is greater than 1, indicating that the animal husbandry production level of herdsmen has been improved to some extent during the policy implementation period. From the phased situation, the overall total factor productivity of animal husbandry in the Inner Mongolia region shows a characteristic of decreasing first and then increasing, while each region shows a different trend of change. (2) In terms of convergence, there is a certain degree of convergence during the policy period for both the region as a whole and each region, indicating that as the grassland compensation policy advances, the spatial differences in herdsmen total factor productivity in animal husbandry show a trend of gradual reduction, and the overall sample represents the sample of all the investigated areas. (3) In terms of driving factors, herdsmen education level, the degree of travel convenience, the degree of by-business, whether they participate in the subsidy policy, and whether they are fined have significant positive effects on their total factor productivity in animal husbandry, while the family dependency ratio and the degree of government regulation have significant negative effects on total factor productivity in animal husbandry. This paper takes the total factor productivity of animal husbandry in pastoral areas as the starting point, providing a new perspective for the research on the effect of the grassland ecological compensation policy. At the same time, it expands the driving factors of total factor productivity in animal husbandry. The conclusion provides a reference for improving the grassland ecological compensation policy and coordinating the harmonious development of production, life, and ecology in pastoral areas.

Suitable spatial morphology of cultivated land is a basic requirement for sustaining agricultural economic development in mountainous areas. Coordinated development efficiency of cultivated land spatial morphology and agricultural economy (CECA) is of great practical significance to measure the efficiency of cultivated land use, and thereby promote regional rural revitalization. However, few studies to date have focused on coordinated development efficiency between cultivated land use and agricultural economy in mountainous areas from the perspective of cultivated land spatial morphology. Thus, the present study explores CECA with this focus using the data envelopment analysis method, and analyzes the key influencing factors via a geographical detector model in 16 counties in western Hubei province. The results show the following: (1) CECA exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity that is high in the south of the study area and low in the north; (2) scale efficiency is the primary limiting factor for CECA; (3) the insufficient output of cultivated land use mainly restricts CECA in the south of the study area, while individual county in the north suffered from input redundancy and insufficient output; and (4) population density in the southern region has the most significant effect on CECA, and gross domestic product has the greatest impact in the northern region. The results contribute to the derivation of specific measures by which to promote cultivated land use efficiency and sustainable development of the social economy.

Assessing Cultivated Land–Use Transition in the Major Grain-Producing Areas of China Based on an Integrated Framework

The cultivated land-use transition (CLUT) is the morphological result of changes in the cultivated land-use mode over time, and the result of the interaction and mutual restriction of the human land system. This paper applies a “spatial–functional” integrated framework to understand the structure and functioning of CLUTs, and quantitatively evaluates and visualizes CLUTs in the major grain-producing area in southern China. The results show that (1) the comprehensive CLUT index in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River changed from 0.0480 to 0.0711 from 2001 to 2019 and indicated significant differences in the transition index between different regions. (2) The CLUT identified a positive aggregation effect under a 5% significance during the period, and the agglomeration degree of the spatial and functional transitions strengthened, which increased from 0.3776 to 0.4673 and from 0.2127 to 0.2952, respectively. (3) The gravity center of the CLUT demonstrated a pattern of migration from the southwest to the northeast, and the migration speed of the gravity center decreased from 2.9401 km/year to 1.2370 km/year. The migration direction of the gravity center for the spatial transition is opposite to the functional transition, and the migration speed of the gravity center for the spatial and functional transitions decreased from 8.3573 km/year to 1.0814 km/year, and from 3.2398 km/year to 1.0254 km/year, respectively. To address this transition, policymakers should formulate differentiated policies to promote the sustainable use of cultivated land through the spatial and functional transition of major grain-producing areas.
