“…Afternoon incursions like this are common for dust in China, especially between 18:00 and 21:00 (Wang et al, 2005a). The peak could not have come from local emissions, for at least two reasons: (1) Local fugitive dust (from roads and open fields) would have been a minimum then because the wind speed decreased from 3-4 m s −1 to 1 m s −1 at the time of the increase; (2) The peak appeared four hours earlier than the normal midnight peak of pollutants, typically caused by reduced dispersion of local emissions during the afternoon and evening.…”
