Regional Assessment of Population and Warming of a Tropical Country, Nigeria, from 2006 to 2036

Abstract: This research assessed population variability and prediction of heat island in a tropical country, Nigeria, from 2006 to 2036. Data for heat island were generated from records of the National Population Commission (NPC) using the population mathematical model. With national population growth rate of 2.67 %, Nigeria recorded average heat island of 6.1 ℃ with variation of 0.1 ℃ per decade indicating that heat island is on the increase. The North Central region had heat island variation of 0.3 ℃ per decade; North… Show more

“…The study area experience intense temperature of above 320C from January to March and as low as 260C within July period. It has annual humidity of 85%, cloud cover of 6 oktas, wind speed of 0-3m/s indicating it is characterized by tropical climate environment (Chiadikobi, Omoboriowo, Chiaghanam, Opatola & Oyebanji, 2011;Nwaerema & Edokpa, 2019;Nwaerema & Nwagbara, 2018).…”

“…Annual humidity value is 85% in the wet season and cloud cover is 6 oktas during the wet season with low trend in the dry season Chiadikobi, 2017). Mean wind speed is between 0-3m/s capable of influencing urban heat and weak wind speed will accelerate thermal discomfort of the city especially during nocturnal hours (Shaibu and Utang, 2013;Nwaerema and Nwagbara, 2018;Nwaerema and Edokpa, 2019). Heat index is characterized by coastal climatic conditions as they impact on human comfort and health.…”

“…Thirst is a late sign of dehydration, and it is important to remain hydrated, particularly before, during and after outdoor activities, especially those involving heavy physical exertion. In addition to children, people with certain conditions including, the elderly, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis and mental retardation are at greater risk of overheating and dehydration (Ana et al, 2013;United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration [USOSHA], 2018;Environmental Protection Agency, 2016;Nwaerema and Edokpa, 2019).…”
